Historical context

The cold war

In 1946 the cold war started between the Soviet Union and the U.S. Durring this cold war the space race began. The space race was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to see who could get a man on the moon first. This started with the launch of Spudnik 1 by the soviets, from there the two powers started raceing eachother. The russians were takeing the lead in the early 1960s, this is when John F. Kennedy made a promise to the people of the U.S. that the U.S. would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, six years before Apollo 11 took flight. The vietnam war was also going on durring this time, there were many protests against the war, the succes of Apollo 11 caused the protests to stop for a short time.
